| 1970 - 1979 | DEEP DECLINE ... |
The 1970s is nearly a lost decade for filmmaking in Manchester with the exception of these four movies:
The Lovers (1972) - Granada turned Jack Rosenthal's TV sitcom into a feature film.
Little Malcolm (1974) - filmed in Oldham in gas board buildings emptied out by a strike, expelled art student Scrawdyke (John Hurt) leads his Party of Dynamic Erection – with devoted followers Wick (John McEnery), Irwin (Raymond Platt) and Nipple (David Warner) in a film that won the Silver Bear at Berlin in 1974 and was eventually released on dvd in 2011.
The Living Dead in the Manchester Morgue (1974) - Spanish filmmaker Jorge Grau and Italian producer Edmondo Amati bring a unit to Manchester to film this zombie horror flick.
Shivers (1974) - When Jo Botting of the BFI interviewed Grau he said that, 'It was filmed in Manchester for commercial reasons and because the script was set there. The producer felt that a Horror film set in Rome or Madrid wouldn't have the same commercial appeal. To him, Manchester seemed a distant, mysterious place, even the name. The truth is, he was right; the film worked and the setting may well be one of the reasons for that ...' (Thanks to Andy Willis for providing this quotation.)
Oh! Also in 1974 - The 'Pop Poll' winners sequence for Stardust filmed at Manchester's Belle Vue.
